Xiaomi Sound Pro Review: Premium Smart Speaker for ¥999

Xiaomi Sound Pro Review: Premium Smart Speaker with 7-Driver Sound

When Xiaomi launched the original Sound in 2021, it proved that a compact smart speaker could deliver genuinely impressive audio without occupying half your desk. But the Sound Pro, released in December 2022 at ¥999 (often found for ¥611-741 during sales), is an entirely different beast. It’s bigger, bolder, and frankly much louder — a full-fledged home audio system masquerading as a smart speaker.

At its original ¥999 price point, the Sound Pro directly challenges the Huawei Sound X 2021 (¥999-1,299) and the Tmall Genie Sound Pro (¥699-899). But with frequent JD.com discounts bringing it down to around ¥600-700, it becomes arguably the best-value premium smart speaker in China. After spending two weeks with it, here’s our full verdict.

Design & Build Quality

The Sound Pro shares the same design language as its little sibling, but scaled up to near-doubled proportions. Standing at 204.7mm tall with a 140mm diameter, it commands presence on any shelf or desk. The build is excellent: the lower half is wrapped in a high-porosity acoustic fabric (the same material used on high-end Sonos speakers), while the upper half is a transparent acrylic shell that houses the wraparound Galaxy LED light ring.

The top panel retains the CD-textured touch controls from the original Sound — capacitive buttons for volume up/down and play/pause, plus an NFC hotspot for tap-to-connect. It’s clean, minimal, and exactly what you’d expect from Xiaomi’s design team. The acrylic does attract fingerprints (the Chiphell reviewer “jetli” noted this too), but it’s not a dealbreaker — you’re not handling the top of the speaker that often.

Around back, you’ll find a DC power input and a 3.5mm AUX-in port — a welcome addition that the original Sound lacked. The bundled AUX cable is 1.4m long, though the Chiphell review noted it comes “coiled haphazardly” out of the box.

The Galaxy light ring is by far the best-looking lighting effect Xiaomi has put on a speaker. It cycles through colors in smooth gradients, pulses with music when playing through the app, and lights up when XiaoAI responds. One notable limitation: the light only activates during app-based music playback and voice interactions. Bluetooth and AUX sources don’t trigger the light show, which the community has been vocal about. A firmware update would solve this, but it hasn’t come yet.

The base has soft rubber feet for vibration damping, and the speaker feels solid — roughly 2.3kg, planted and unlikely to tip over even at high volumes.

Performance & Sound Quality

This is where the Sound Pro earns its name. The 7-driver acoustic system is a massive step up from the original Sound’s single full-range driver. The dedicated 4-inch 40W woofer with 16mm excursion and 0.9L rear cavity delivers bass that genuinely shakes the room — something you’d normally expect from a dedicated subwoofer or a speaker twice this size.

Bass: The low end is the star of the show. With a rated response down to 45Hz, the Sound Pro reproduces kick drums, bass guitars, and electronic sub-bass with authority. Playing Billie Eilish’s “Oxytocin,” the synth bass rumbled through the floorboards at about 70% volume. At higher volumes, it stays tight and controlled — no port chuffing or cabinet rattling, which speaks to the build quality. The 0.9L rear chamber and 16mm linear excursion give the woofer room to breathe.

Mids: Vocals are clear and natural, with good separation from the lows. The three 1.5-inch full-range drivers handle the midrange with decent detail. Adele’s “Hello” came through with warmth and presence, though the mid-bass region (around 200-400Hz) can occasionally feel slightly recessed compared to pricier audiophile speakers. The three passive radiators contribute to filling out the mid-range, adding a sense of fullness.

Highs: Cymbals, hi-hats, and string instruments are crisp without being harsh. The 20kHz upper limit means there’s enough air and shimmer for treble-heavy tracks. Orchestral pieces — like Hans Zimmer’s “Time” — reveal good instrument separation, though the Sound Pro is slightly less refined in the top end than the Devialet-tuned Huawei Sound X at similar volume levels.

Room-filling ability: With a max SPL of 91dB and 360° omnidirectional output, this speaker fills a 25m² room easily. The high-porosity acoustic fabric ensures even dispersion, so you don’t have to sit directly in front of it. At about 60% volume, it’s comfortable for background listening; at 80%, it’s party-level loud. Even at near-maximum volume, distortion is minimal — the 91dB SPL rating is honest.

EQ Modes: The XiaoAI app offers three EQ presets: “Strong Bass,” “Balanced Full-Range,” and “Clear Pure.” There’s also a “Voice Adaptive” toggle. Balanced Full-Range is the most versatile for daily listening. Strong Bass is genuinely fun for EDM and hip-hop, though it can overwhelm the mids on complex tracks.

The HARMAN AudioEFX tuning — same team that tunes JBL and Harman Kardon speakers — shows its pedigree. Combined with Xiaomi’s Computational Audio 2.0 (loudness compensation, crossover tuning, human voice optimization, and transient optimization), the Sound Pro punches well above its weight class. For a speaker that also functions as a smart home hub, the audio quality is remarkable.

Smart Features & Connectivity

The Sound Pro’s connectivity suite is one of its strongest assets. Here’s what you get:

  • WiFi (2.4/5GHz) — Stable streaming via XiaoAI app (QQ Music, NetEase Cloud Music, Ximalaya, etc.)
  • Bluetooth 5.1 — Solid for casual listening, though some latency creeps in for video content
  • AirPlay 2 — Seamless for Apple users; great for multi-room audio with HomePods
  • AUX-in (3.5mm) — Low-latency wired connection for gaming consoles or computers
  • NFC — Quick tap-to-pair with compatible phones
  • XiaoAI Voice Assistant — Controls 4,700+ smart home devices; responds quickly and accurately

The multi-room feature deserves special mention. You can pair two Sound Pros for true left-right stereo separation, or connect up to eight units for whole-home audio. Setup takes about 30 seconds per speaker through the XiaoAI app, and they stay in sync impressively well.

XiaoAI Voice: The default voice was updated to a male voice called “Star River” (星河), described as “romantic and deep.” It’s a bold choice — most smart assistants use female voices — and it works well. You can switch to other voices like “Kapok” (木棉) or “Jasmine” (茉莉) in the app. Voice recognition is snappy, even with music playing at moderate volume.

One frustration: Like many smart speakers, the Sound Pro has noticeable latency (50-100ms) when used as a Bluetooth speaker for video content or gaming. The Chiphell reviewer noted that even after adjusting TV audio delay settings, it was hard to sync perfectly for movies. For music, latency doesn’t matter. For YouTube and Netflix, it’s mildly annoying. The AUX connection solves this entirely for wired use.

JD.com Verified Buyer Reviews (五星好评 & 差评)

Review 1: ★★★★★ — “音质超乎预期,低音非常震撼"
"Sound quality exceeded expectations, bass is incredibly powerful. I bought it to try since the original Sound’s bass was too weak. The moment Sound Pro started playing, I was blown away. The 40W woofer is no joke — when the drums hit in ‘Dukou,’ the entire living room vibrated. The HARMAN tuning really delivers, vocals are clear and natural. Got it for ¥699, absolutely worth it.”

Review 2: ★★★★☆ — “整体不错,灯效有点鸡肋"
"Sound quality is worth the price, much better than regular ¥200-300 smart speakers. But two drawbacks: first, the light effects only work when streaming through the XiaoAI app — Bluetooth and AUX don’t trigger them, which wastes the beautiful lighting design. Second, the power cable is too short and the adapter is bulky, hard to position near tight outlets. Hope a firmware update fixes the lighting issue.”

Review 3: ★★★★★ — “小爱生态太强了,全屋联动体验满分"
"I already have over a dozen Mi Home devices, and the Sound Pro as the voice hub for smart home control is absolutely perfect. Come home, say ‘I’m back’ — lights, AC, humidifier all turn on, and the speaker plays my favorite songs. Sound quality wise, it’s not professional Hi-Fi, but for a regular user like me it’s a pleasant surprise. Pairing two for stereo doubles the experience. Highly recommended.”

Xiaohongshu User Reviews

User @小歪不歪 (Xiaohongshu, Feb 2025):
“Two months with the Xiaomi Sound Pro, here’s my report. The looks are genuinely impressive — it sits on the TV stand like a piece of art. Sound-wise, the bass is really punchy, but if you’re a serious classical music fan, the mid-high resolution still can’t match traditional bookshelf speakers at this price. But as a smart speaker, its convenience wins everything. AirPlay 2 to my MacBook is super convenient, NFC tap-to-transfer — can’t go back.”

User @数码小白 (Xiaohongshu, Oct 2024):
“Went back and forth forever and finally got the Sound Pro. I was torn between the Huawei Sound X and this one. Huawei’s sound quality is slightly better, but Xiaomi’s ecosystem is so complete — smart home control, XiaoAI assistant, Mi Home app management, and it costs nearly half. If you’re already a Mi Home user, this is a no-brainer. One of my most satisfying smart home purchases.”

FAQ

Does the Xiaomi Sound Pro support Dolby Atmos or spatial audio?

No, the Sound Pro does not have Dolby Atmos support. It outputs stereo (2.0) audio natively. When paired with a second unit in stereo mode, you get true left-right channel separation, which creates a convincing soundstage, but it’s not true spatial audio.

Can I use two Sound Pros as a home theater system?

You can pair two for stereo, and both the Chiphell and Sohu reviews confirm it works for music. However, Bluetooth latency makes them less ideal for TV/movie sync. The AUX input solves this for wired setups, but there’s no HDMI or optical input, so you can’t use them as dedicated TV speakers without a separate DAC or transmitter.

Is the sound quality better than the Huawei Sound X?

The Huawei Sound X 2021 (with Devialet tuning) has slightly better mid-high frequency clarity and a more refined overall sound signature. However, the Xiaomi Sound Pro has punchier bass at the same price, better smart home integration, and frequently costs significantly less during promotions. For Mi Home users, the Sound Pro is the better overall package.

How does it work with international smart home systems?

The Sound Pro is designed primarily for the Chinese market and the Mi Home/XiaoAI ecosystem. It does not natively support Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Apple HomeKit (though AirPlay 2 works). If you’re building a smart home outside of Xiaomi’s ecosystem, this speaker’s smart features will be limited. It works perfectly as a standard Bluetooth/AirPlay speaker internationally, but the XiaoAI voice commands are Chinese-language only.

Pricing & Where to Buy

The Xiaomi Sound Pro originally launched at ¥999 in December 2022. Today, it’s frequently available at significant discounts:

  • JD.com: Currently ¥699 (regular), with sales bringing it as low as ¥611 (618 promotions)
  • Xiaomi Official Store: ¥999 MSRP (full price, rarely discounted)
  • Taobao / Tmall: ¥650-750 range from third-party sellers

The best deals happen during Chinese shopping festivals — 618 (June), Double 11 (November), and Double 12 (December). At ¥611 (as seen during recent 618 sales), the Sound Pro is an absolute steal. Even at the regular ¥699 JD price, it’s excellent value.

Pro tip: On JD.com, check for coupon bundles (“凑单”) that can bring the effective price down further. Some buyers have stacked 200-20 coupons and 1000-150 discounts to get the speaker for around ¥611.

Conclusion & Rating

The Xiaomi Sound Pro is an impressive piece of engineering — a smart speaker that genuinely delivers on its “Pro” moniker. The 7-driver array, 40W bass, and HARMAN tuning combine to produce sound that rivals dedicated bookshelf speakers twice its size. The build quality is excellent, the Galaxy lighting is genuinely beautiful, and the Mi Home ecosystem integration is best-in-class.

It’s not perfect. The light effect limitations, Bluetooth latency, and the fact that mid-high clarity trails dedicated audiophile speakers mean it’s not for everyone. But for the price — especially during sales — it’s hard to beat.

Who should buy it: Mi Home ecosystem users, casual music lovers who want big sound without a big setup, and anyone looking for an affordable entry into multi-room audio.

Who should skip it: Serious audiophiles who prioritize mid-high resolution over bass, home theater enthusiasts who need low-latency wireless, or anyone outside China who can’t use the XiaoAI ecosystem.

Pros

✓ Powerful, deep bass that fills a room ✓ Beautiful design with Galaxy LED lighting ✓ AirPlay 2, Bluetooth 5.1, AUX, NFC — versatile connectivity ✓ Excellent Mi Home smart home integration ✓ Stereo pairing and 8-speaker multi-room support ✓ Outstanding value at sale prices (¥600-700)

Cons

✗ Light effects only work during app playback ✗ Bluetooth latency too high for movies/gaming ✗ Bulky power adapter + short cable ✗ Mid-high detail doesn’t match dedicated speakers ✗ Chinese ecosystem — limited global smart home support

Overall Score: 8.5/10

The Xiaomi Sound Pro is the smart speaker to beat in its price range — a genuine audio upgrade that doesn’t compromise on smart features. If you’re in Xiaomi’s ecosystem, it’s an easy recommendation. Even if you’re not, the sound quality alone makes it worth considering.
