Aqara Motion Sensor P1 Review: The Eyes of Your Smart Home

Aqara Motion Sensor P1 adds light sensing, 5-second detection interval, and 5-year battery life at ¥99 — the most capable Zigbee motion sensor for smart home automation.

Aqara Motion Sensor P1 Review: The Eyes of Your Smart Home

Introduction

Motion sensors are the workhorses of any smart home automation — they trigger lights, activate security, and control climate. The Aqara Motion Sensor P1 (人体传感器P1) is Aqara’s second-generation motion sensor, upgrading from the original with a 5-second detection interval (vs 60 seconds), built-in light sensor, and configurable sensitivity. At ¥99 (~$14 USD) on JD.com, it’s a small sensor with big impact.

With 15,000+ reviews on JD.com and a 96% positive rating, the P1 is the most popular Zigbee motion sensor in China. Let’s see what makes it special.

Design and Build

The P1 is a tiny 33mm diameter, 30mm tall cylinder — about the size of a large coin. The white plastic body is unobtrusive and blends into most walls and ceilings. It comes with a magnetic ball-joint mount that allows 360° rotation and 90° tilt — far more flexible than the fixed mount on the Gen 1.

The magnetic mount is a brilliant design choice. Stick the metal plate to a wall with the included 3M adhesive, and the sensor snaps on magnetically. Need to adjust the angle? Just twist it. Want to move it? Peel and re-stick.

Build quality is typical Aqara — solid, no creaks, and the CR2450 battery compartment opens with a satisfying quarter-turn.

Performance

The 5-second detection interval is the headline upgrade. The original Aqara sensor had a 60-second “blind period” after each trigger, making it useless for staircases and hallways where you need continuous presence detection. The P1’s 5-second gap makes it viable for these applications.

Detection accuracy is excellent within the 7m/170° cone. It reliably picks up walking motion, though very slow movement (crawling baby, sleeping pet turning over) may not trigger it — this is inherent to PIR technology, not a P1 flaw.

The built-in light sensor is the sleeper feature. It measures ambient light from 0 to 83,000 lux, enabling automations like “turn on lights only when it’s dark.” This eliminates lights activating during daytime.

Battery life is rated at 5 years (based on 50 triggers/day). The CR2450 is a common, widely available coin cell.

What Chinese Users Say

Aggregated Ratings: 4.6/5 ★ (15,000+ reviews on JD.com, 96% positive)

“P1 is so much better than Gen 1 — the 5-second detection interval finally makes it usable in hallways. Paired with Aqara switches and hub: lights auto-on when passing, auto-off when gone. Light sensor is practical — no false triggers during daytime.”

“Magnetic mount design is brilliant — easy angle adjustment. ¥99 per sensor isn’t cheap, but compared to generic ¥20-30 ones, the stability and build quality are on a completely different level.”

“Battery is genuinely long-lasting — nearly a year without replacement. Downside: needs an Aqara hub. If your home is all Xiaomi devices, you’ll need a separate hub.”

“Placed at the bathroom door — night light auto-on for midnight bathroom trips. No more stumbling in the dark. Setup is simple — a few steps in the Aqara Home app.”

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • 5-second detection interval (vs 60s on Gen 1)
  • Built-in light sensor for conditional automations
  • Magnetic ball-joint mount — flexible placement
  • 5-year battery life
  • Zigbee 3.0 — reliable, low-latency
  • Apple HomeKit compatible

Cons:

  • Requires Aqara Zigbee hub
  • PIR technology — no static presence detection
  • Pets may trigger it (no pet-immunity mode)
  • ¥99 each — whole-house coverage adds up
  • White color only (visible on dark walls)

vs Competitors

vs Xiaomi Motion Sensor 2 (¥49): Xiaomi’s sensor is cheaper and has a light sensor, but uses Bluetooth Mesh (slower, shorter range) and has a 30-second blind period. The ¥50 premium for Aqara is absolutely worth it.

vs Aqara FP2 (¥499): The FP2 uses mmWave radar for static presence detection (knows if you’re sitting still). P1 is the budget option — motion only, but ¥400 cheaper.

FAQ

Q: Will it detect my cat/dog? A: Yes — PIR sensors detect all warm-body motion. Place it high (ceiling-mount) and angle downward to reduce pet triggers.

Q: Can I use it outdoors? A: No — the P1 is not weatherproof. For outdoor use, consider Aqara’s dedicated outdoor sensor or place in a covered porch.

Q: How do I know when the battery is low? A: The Aqara Home app shows battery percentage and sends a push notification when it drops below 15%.

Who should buy: Smart home users building automations. Anyone wanting lights that react to presence. HomeKit users.

Who should skip: Users wanting static presence detection (sitting still on a couch) — get the FP2 instead.
